10 Questions You Should Ask Your Appliance Salesperson

12.27.21

When you are going into an appliance store you might be really overwhelmed. When you walk into a store, you are likely going to be greeted by a salesperson asking if you need any help finding something. The most common answer is, “no, I am okay.”

You are not bothering the salesperson by asking them questions. Be honest with them and tell them that you would love their help and you need help in answering questions.

Here are some of the questions you should be asking your salesperson when you go into an appliance store.

1. Is the Extended Warranty Worth the Cost?

Most appliances come with a built-in warranty. Some warranties last 1 to 3 years depending on the type of appliance or the brand. It is important to know what the initial warranty covers and how long it will stay in effect.

An appliance salesperson will give you the opportunity to purchase an extended warranty. Contrary to what you believe, the salesperson is not trying to sell you something just to make more money. They truly want you to purchase the extended warranty in the event that something happens to your appliance shortly after purchasing.

Nobody can predict what will happen and sometimes an appliance will just stop working. An extended warranty can cost anywhere from $100-$300 depending on the length of the extended warranty.

It might be frustrating to have to pay more money on your appliance but the cost of an extended warranty isn’t as expensive as paying an appliance repairman out of pocket or replacing the entire machine.

Ask about the extended warranty policy to see if the extended warranty is right for you and your needs.

2. Is Delivery Included in the Cost of the Appliance?

Typically, the cost of delivery is not included in the cost of your appliance. Delivery costs can be anywhere from $50-$150 depending on the type of appliance being delivered and how many appliances you need to be delivered and set up at your home.

Make sure that you ask your appliance worker how much delivery costs so you can be aware of the extra costs at check-out.

3. What Makes Brands Different?

When you walk into an appliance store you will see hundreds of different appliances with many different brands. There are so many different brands of appliances that it might be overwhelming and confusing.

Don’t be afraid to ask your appliance salesperson what makes the brands different. Some brands will have subtle differences while other brands will be profoundly unique and offer features that might be appealing to you.

4. Which Brand Would You Suggest?

Ask your appliance salesperson which brand they choose. If you are seeking dishwashers, don’t be afraid to ask the salesperson, “which brand of dishwasher do you have and why?” Or “if you could get a new dishwasher today, what would it be?”

They will likely tell you exactly why they chose their appliance and why it made sense for them and their needs. Each salesperson will pick a different brand depending on what they are dealing with in their personal lives.

For example, one salesperson might want to choose a fridge where you can’t see fingerprints because they have little ones who are constantly touching the fridge. Other people might be empty-nesters and have no interest in the no smudge refrigerators.

5. How Quickly Will My Appliance Come?

An important deciding factor is how quickly an appliance will arrive. If your washer broke and you need one now, then you will want to know which appliance is on the floor. If you aren’t on a timetable, then you have a lot more options.

Ever since the beginning of the Pandemic, people have had a tough time getting their inventory stocked - appliance stores have been no exception.

So, before you make your decision, ask your salesperson what the expected delivery would be for that appliance.

6. Does the Appliance Store Fix the Appliance?

Ask who will fix your appliance if something happens to it after purchase. Most of the time, the appliance store will not be responsible for fixing the appliances and it is done through the warranty company. The warranty company will be the one who handles the appliance repair.

Be sure to gather all of the information for your warranty so you know exactly who to call in case of a broken-down appliance.

7. What is the Best Appliance for my Budget?

You could walk into an appliance store and ask, “what is the best appliance?” However, that will likely give you a different answer than if you said, “what is the best appliance for my budget?” Make sure that the salesperson knows your budget before looking at appliances.

8. Does the Brand Offer Other Appliances?

Before you purchase an appliance, you might want to know if you can get other appliances that match.

For example, if you purchase a certain refrigerator you might want to check to see if there are other kitchen appliances that will match your refrigerator if you want to eventually purchase other kitchen appliances that match your refrigerator.

9. How Do I Know if There is a Rebate?

At Kelly's Appliance, we try to make sure that all of our rebated items are marked. However, there are often so many rebates that we can’t keep up. You can ask any salesperson about rebates, and they can look up a rebate website called Nationwide Rebate Center and they can tell you what rebates are available.

Any salesperson can explain to you the process of the rebate and how you can get money back from your appliance.

10. Do you Have any Upcoming Sales?

One thing that you should ask is if they have any upcoming sales. We all know how frustrating it can be to purchase something and then it goes on sale the next week. Ask your salesperson if there are any upcoming sales that you would need to know so that you can get the best deal.

If you don’t need the appliance right away, then it might be worth waiting until a sale occurs.

Takeaways

Believe it or not, salespeople actually want you to ask questions. The more questions you ask, the more confident your salesperson will be that you are getting the appliance that best suits your needs.
