Get Your Kitchen Back In Order

Whether you’re rejoicing or slightly dreading it (or a mixture of both), school routine is about to rule the day. Adjusting from summer to school is never easy, but may be especially hard this year on kids and parents who are a little out of practice. Hectic mornings of getting everyone’s breakfasts made and lunches packed pour right into hectic afternoons of sports practices and trying to cook a somewhat healthy dinner. Believe it or not, your kitchen might be the secret weapon! Here are some ways you can get your kitchen back-to-school ready.

Dedicate A Space For Kid Stuff

The kitchen is a hub for all members of the home. Instead of expecting our children to always navigate around our stuff or things for the family, everyone’s routine can move a lot smoother when we allow certain spaces for just the kid’s stuff. An easy way to do this is to dedicate a drawer or area in the refrigerator for afternoon snacks or lunches so kids can easily access what they need without moving everything around (and still swearing they can’t find it!). You can do the same thing with your cupboard or pantry to reduce frustrations. Mornings are sometimes rough but can be made much easier with a dedicated cupboard or pantry space for your kids’ breakfast. So, when sleepy eyes are trying to adjust to light once again, they can know exactly where their favorite cereal, oatmeal, or baked good is located. Another great tip is to dedicate one cupboard available to store lunch boxes so you’re not scrambling the next day to find them. This also gives the child a chance to clean out their lunch box so forgotten foods from the day before don’t stink up their backpack overnight.

Set Up A Brewing Station

There is a reason there are so many coffee mugs with the saying, “Don’t talk to me until I’ve had my coffee”. Many of us need that reassuring cup of hot brew in the morning to get our day started. Just like we take care of our kids and provide areas for them to easily find what they need to function throughout the day, be mindful to take care of yourself too with a cupboard space solely for what you need to get the day started. Keep it stocked with fresh ground coffee, a grinder when you forget to grind the coffee the night before, your coffee press or pour-over coffee maker, favorite mugs, filters, tea bags, and everything you need. So even if the morning turns out to be rougher than anticipated, at least you have your cup of fuel to survive it.

Healthy Frozen Foods to Simplify Dinner

Healthy foods and spending quality time together at dinner is important for the family as a whole. However, between a busy day at work, soccer practices, and homework, it’s hard to make both a healthy meal from scratch and have enough time to sit down before other things get in the way. Make family dinners easy with a handful of frozen foods that make dinner prep so much easier. This can include frozen veggies in place of slicing and steaming veggies, frozen sides so you can just focus on the main entree, or even frozen cheese pizzas you can just add healthy toppings too. You could even make meals in bulk and freeze them for those nights that get away from you.

Adjusting back to school can be hard on kids and parents alike so remember to give yourselves a little grace. Getting your kitchen organized and prepared for the days ahead can make life easier and less frustrating for everyone as you go through this adjustment.
