New Year, New Appliances? How To Know If You Need a Change

12.31.21

Most major appliances are built to last 10 years. Therefore, if your appliance has reached the 10-year mark and isn’t performing as well then it might be time for a replacement. Besides age, there are some other signs that your major appliances might need to be replaced before that 10-year mark.

In this article, we will discuss the major appliances and the signs you should look out for to determine if it’s time to replace your machine.

Refrigerator

When you think of kitchen appliances the first thing you might think of is a refrigerator. You might not know if it is time to get a refrigerator or not but here are a few signs it is time that you replace it;

Features are not working: If some of the features on your machine are no longer working, i.e. the ice dispenser, or water feature.

Running warm: Although this might be a simple fix of the refrigerator’s thermostat, it might also be something a lot more serious.

Extremely noisy: If your refrigerator all of a sudden starts making an abnormal noise then it might be time to get a new refrigerator. There are a couple of reasons that a fridge will be noisy. The noises could indicate a problem with the defrost timer, condenser fan, or compressor.

Constantly running: It is very common to hear your refrigerator every once in a while, make a noise but then it will turn off. If the noise is constant, then there might be a bigger issue.

Broken seals: Once the seals around your refrigerator are broken then your food will not stay fresh. You can either get the seals fixed or purchase a new fridge. Either way, the seals need to be in good working condition to be able to keep the food fresh inside.

Oven

There are some obvious signs that you need to purchase a new oven. For example, your oven just won’t turn on. There are a few other signs that you might need to make a change. Some signs include:

Rust: You might think that rust inside of an oven isn’t all that bad - but you would be wrong. Rust is not only aesthetically unappealing, but it also can be very harmful. Rust will encourage the growth of dangerous bacteria that can cause tetanus.

Cracked glass: If the glass is broken on your oven, then it is time to get a new oven. It isn’t very convenient to fix the broken glass - it is easier to just purchase a brand new one (unless the oven is still under warranty).

Impossible to get clean: If you are scrubbing and scrubbing at your oven and it won’t get clean then it might be time to get a new oven. There is going to be some grime in an oven, but it shouldn’t be caked-on all over the inside.

Buttons stop working: Obviously, you need the buttons on the front of the oven to make it run. If the buttons have stopped working and your oven is out of warranty, then it is time for a new oven.

Strange noises: Ovens shouldn’t make loud abnormal noises when they are running. If your oven has started to make abnormal noises, then it means that something is wrong, and it needs to be replaced.

Microwave

Microwaves are made to last about 10 years, so if your microwave is causing issues and it is older than 10 years then it is time to get a new one. There are a couple of other signs that you need a new microwave including:

Smells in use: If the microwave is smelling odd then there might be something wrong with the mechanics of the microwave. If you smell something burning, then you need to turn it off immediately.

See smoke: If you see smoke immediately turn off the microwave.

The door doesn’t open or close properly: Sometimes the latch on the oven won’t lock the door properly and it is difficult to open. Sometimes, this is a simple fix, but others require purchasing a brand new microwave.

Buttons don’t work: Typically, if the buttons stop working on your microwave, then it is time to purchase a new one. If your microwave is under warranty, then make sure to call your warranty first before purchasing another machine.

Functions no longer working: Some microwaves are luxury brands that come with unique features. If the features have stopped working, then you might want to purchase a new one to get those features back.

Making noises: If the microwave begins to make noises that are a bit abnormal.

Dishwasher

There is nothing more frustrating than realizing your dishwasher isn’t working - especially when you are filled with a pile of dirty dishes in your sink. If your dishwasher is 10 years old and has stopped working, then it is time to just get a new one. Other than age, here are some signs that you need to get a new dishwasher:

Dishes aren’t coming out hot: If you open up your dishwasher after a recently finished cycle and your dishes are cold then something isn’t right - it’s time for a new dishwasher.

Not draining: The water in your dishwasher should be draining completely after the end of each cycle. If you open up the dishwasher and there is a puddle at the bottom, then there is something wrong. If your dishwasher is around that 10 years mark, then there is no point in fixing it.

Stopping in the middle of the cycle: There are several reasons why a dishwasher can’t finish a cycle. No matter the reason the dishwasher can’t finish a cycle, it needs to be fixed or replaced. If the dishwasher is out of warranty, it might make more sense to purchase a new dishwasher as opposed to paying the cost of repairs.

The door won’t latch: Often, the dishwasher won’t even begin if the dishwasher will not properly latch. The dishwasher needs to be latched in order to function properly.

A leak underneath the dishwasher: If a brand-new dishwasher was recently installed and it starts leaking then it might just be a simple fix. However, if the dishwasher is old and starts leaking then it might be time for a change.

Washer

It can be pretty annoying when your washer stops working. You might even ask yourself, “do I need a new washing machine?” Here are some of the reasons that your washer might need to be replaced:

Error Codes: There are a few different error codes that can flash at any time during the cycle. For example, an error code might flash as the washer is trying to drain - indicating the washer can’t drain. You can either fix the problem or buy a new washing machine. If the washer is around that 10-year mark it is time to get a new one.

Won’t drain: There are many reasons that a washer won’t drain. Sometimes the reason is simple while others can get expensive to fix. If the fix isn’t simple, then it is time to make a change.

Broken seal: The seal could be a simple fix, but if the washer is near its 10-year mark then it might not be worth fixing the seals.

Leak in front of washer: If your washer starts to leak then there is something wrong and it needs to be addressed right away. A leaking washing machine might be a sign you need a new one.

Cracked or damaged tub: If the washer tub is broken then it is time to get a new washing machine. Unless you are still under warranty, that is going to be too expensive of a fix.

Loud noise: Be aware of any abnormal sounds that are coming from your washer. If there are abnormal sounds, then it might be the sign of a much bigger problem.

Dryer

There you are with a pile of wet clothes and your dryer won’t dry them; “is it time for a new dryer?” Here are some signs that you need a new dryer:

Clothes won’t dry: If you have exhausted all measures (cleaning out lint and vent) and your dryer is still not drying then it is time to make a change.

Error codes: Just like a washing machine, dryers can start flashing error codes. The codes will reflect what is going on inside the machine. If the codes can’t be resolved, then it might be time for a change.

Burning smell: Your dryer should never smell of burning. A smell of a smoke when your dryer is running isn’t a good sign.
