We are going to be discussing some of the main concerns people have about taking care of their grill. Some things that you have to consider when thinking about taking care of your grill:

  • Cleaning your girl

  • Replacing Pellets

  • Protecting from the Elements

Cleaning Your Grill

It is extremely important to clean your grill regularly. There are certainly things you should do after every use, what you should do once a week and what you should do every few weeks.

  1. After each grill: While the grill is still warm make sure you clean off the grates. Be sure to remove any leftover food and get rid of any grease buildup that might happen.

  2. Once a week: Each week you will want to wash down your grates, clean the grease drip tray, clean out the grills burn pot, and remove the ash.

  3. Every few weeks: Every few weeks you should clean out your smokestack.

Some reasons to clean your grill:

  • Protect your food from ash: Every time you cook your food, ash and grime will build up due to the pellets. If you don’t clean out the ash then the ash will circulate around the grill and get into your food.

  • Control Temperature: The more ash and grime is left in your grill, the harder your grill has to work to function. If you don’t clean out your grill then it will be harder to control the temperature.

  • Proper grill function: If you don’t clean your grill the grease drain tube could get clogged which could result in a fire. Not only would you burn your food but it could ruin your grill.

How to Clean Your Grill

  • Bristle Free Brush: First of all, the worst thing you could use on your grill is a wire brush to scrape the grates. Many studies have shown that the bristles on the wire brushes can easily come off and then get into your food! The best brush for your grill would be a bristle-free brush!

  • Rags/Paper towels: If you are worried about ruining your grates with the type of brush that you are using then you can simply use paper towels or rags.

  • Cleaning Solution: There are many cleaning solutions that are specific to pellet grills. Make sure you get a cleaning solution that is safe on your grates. Here are the best cleaning solutions for your grill.

Protecting from the Elements

One of the most important things you can do is protect your grill from the elements. Here in Oregon, we experience a lot of rain. It is important when you purchase a grill that you have an idea as to how to protect it from sitting outside in the rain all year round.

It is important to get a nice cover for your grill and to ensure that the cover is tied down onto your grill. Many people even get a small gazebo to cover their grill for further protection.

Don’t forget to protect your pellets as well! Never leave your pellets in the grill (even though it might be convenient). You will quickly ruin your pellets and they will not burn. To ensure a long life for your pellets you should properly store your pellets in a safe place with little to no moisture.
