In this blog, we break down the most common appliance problems, share simple troubleshooting tips, and help you know when it’s time to call a professional. Whether you’re dealing with a warm fridge, a slow dryer, or a dishwasher that just won’t clean like it used to, we’ve got you covered. And when it’s time for expert guidance, parts, or a replacement, Kelly’s Appliances is proud to serve Oregon homeowners with top brands, knowledgeable support, and friendly local service across our Salem, Corvallis, Eugene, and Central Point locations.

Here’s a look at the most common appliance problems and what you can do about them before calling in the professionals.

    Refrigerator Not Cooling Properly

Common causes: Dirty condenser coils, a faulty thermostat, or a door seal that isn’t tight.
    Quick fix:

    • Check the temperature setting,  it should be around 37–40°F for the fridge and 0°F for the freezer.

    • Clean the coils (usually on the back or bottom of the fridge) to help it run more efficiently.

    • Make sure the door gasket seals properly, no gaps or tears.

If your fridge still isn’t cooling, it could be a sign of a failing compressor or control board, which requires professional service.

    Dishwasher Not Cleaning Well

Common causes: Clogged spray arms, dirty filters, or hard water buildup.
    Quick fix:

    • Remove and rinse the dishwasher filter and spray arms.

    • Use a dishwasher cleaner or vinegar cycle to remove mineral deposits.

    • Make sure you’re not overloading the racks, water needs room to circulate.

If dishes still come out dirty, it may be time to check the water inlet valve or heating element.

    Washer Not Draining or Spinning

Common causes: Clogged drain pump, unbalanced loads, or a worn-out belt.
    Quick fix:

    • Check the drain hose for kinks or blockages.

    • Make sure clothes are evenly distributed in the drum.

    • Clean the washer filter (many front-load models have one at the bottom front panel).

If it’s still not draining, the drain pump might need replacement.

Dryer Taking Too Long to Dry

Common causes: Lint buildup, blocked vents, or a faulty heating element.
    Quick fix:

    • Clean the lint trap before every cycle.

    • Check the vent hose and outdoor vent for obstructions.

    • Avoid overloading the dryer, it needs space for air circulation.

If clothes are still damp after a full cycle, it may be time to have the heating element or thermostat checked.

    Oven Not Heating Evenly

Common causes: Faulty heating element or temperature sensor.
    Quick fix:

    • Test the oven’s temperature with an oven thermometer.

    • If the temperature is off, recalibrate or replace the sensor.

    • For electric ovens, inspect the bake and broil elements for visible damage or wear.

Gas ovens may have issues with the igniter, which should be replaced by a technician.

    Range Burners Not Lighting

Common causes: Clogged burner holes or faulty ignition switch.
    Quick fix:

    • Remove and clean the burner caps and heads with warm, soapy water.

    • Check for food debris or grease buildup around the igniter.

    • For electric ranges, ensure coils are properly plugged in and not damaged.

    Appliance Making Strange Noises

Common causes: Loose parts, worn-out motors, or normal operation sounds that have gotten louder.
    Quick fix:

    • Identify where the noise is coming from, the back, fan, or motor area.

    • Check for loose screws or panels.

    • Clean fan blades and vents.

If the noise is new or getting worse, it could be a motor issue best left to a professional.

When To Get a New Appliance
