Why do appliances have micro ban?

5.06.22

Microban has been all over television and social media these days. Commercials show Microban in a spray bottle and suggest that it keeps germs off of the surface for 24 hours! So, why would somebody need Microban in their appliance?

GE has started using antimicrobial technology and placing it in their dishwashers and their washing machines, but why? Simple answer - dishwashers and washing machines can get really dirty and be filled with germs.

Your Dishwasher & Washing Machines are Gross

When is the last time that you cleaned your dishwasher and your washing machine? Many people are under the impression that since a washing machine and dishwasher are meant to clean things they are self-cleansing. This is just not true. Dishwashers and washing machines should be cleaned at least once a month.

Even if you are cleaning your machines on a regular basis you might notice that they are still getting gross, moldy, smelly, or have bacteria growing. Just think about how much food, dirt, and grime goes through your machines. The more you use it the more it will need to be cleaned.

Why Microban?

Front-load washing machines tend to get black mold on the front trap and on the inside. GE noticed that there were some ways to avoid this mold development, but even so, customers were still complaining. They decided to use the Microban Antimicrobial technology in the front portion of their machines to prevent the mold.

How did GE impliment Microban?

GE released their Microban products in September 2021 and they are still the only brand of its kind to incorporate the technology into their machines.

GE says, that the Microban technology "is built into common touchpoints of the machine including handles, control panel, silverware baskets, and filters to remain 99% cleaner than untreated surfaces. Adopting the Drain, Dry, Defend, approach, the UltraFresh System™ Dishwasher works in between cycles to protect against mold, mildew, and odors caused by water and food residues."

They continue on to say, " Microban® technology combined with the automatic circulation of fresh air and renewal of water create an inhospitable environment for unwanted microbes, so the dishwasher is left fresher cycle after cycle."
